1. Understanding Implicit Bias

In this workshop, we will delve into the intricate dynamics of implicit bias, exploring its connections to stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. Gain essential insights into why understanding this facet of human behavior is paramount in an educational context.
2. Search Process Advocate

Participate in an engaging conversation about strategies to enrich the diversity of candidates in departmental job searches. We will also discuss methods to mitigate bias throughout the candidate selection process, ensuring fairness and objectivity.
3. Laying the Groundwork: Basic Concepts & Activities for Racial Equity Work*

This training is your foundation for comprehending racial equity. Discover why a laser focus on racial equity is pivotal in the educational realm. Uncover what equity-mindedness entails and how it differs from deficit-mindedness. Engage in activities designed to foster equity-minded competence and establish a shared vocabulary.
4. Defining the Equity Problem and Disaggregating Data*

Join us to learn how to spotlight racial equity gaps through data disaggregation, understanding their magnitude, and establishing a baseline for measuring progress. Discover why disaggregating data by race and ethnicity is crucial for advancing equity. Gain insights into interpreting data that reveal disparities in outcomes by race/ethnicity, serving as indicators of institutional performance influenced by race. Learn strategies to avoid “data paralysis” by narrowing the focus to division, department, program, course, or practitioner levels. Deploy data sense-making techniques and establish goals for actionable change.
5. Creating Solutions Through Inquiry*

We will learn how to support action with inquiry through race-conscious observations in the places where students interact with faculty and staff. We will gain frameworks and utilize methods of discourse analysis to analyze documents, syllabi, and webpages, understanding the messages they may convey to and about minoritized students.
6. Sustaining and Scaling the Work*
  • Date: Thursday, May 16, 2024
  • Time: 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
In this session, we will learn how to sustain the ongoing effort to dismantle racial inequality in both individual practices and institutional structures and policies. These tools aid in embedding racial equity as a habitual mindset for practitioners and leaders, preventing this important work from being sidelined. We will delve into questions that can continuously fuel the cycle of race-conscious inquiry, reflection, and change.
