February 10, 2024, marks the twelfth year of collaboration between the bands from Valparaiso High School and Valparaiso University to present epic film music in the Chapel of the Resurrection. Special guests this year will be the Westminster Christian High School Band from Miami, Florida. The Westminster band will combine with the VHS and VU bands in the second half of the program.
As you think about memorable movies and television programs, you can probably also recall the compelling music composed especially for each. The music is expressive and helps tell the story. Our theme this year is Spies and Private Eyes, featuring the music from several well-known films and television series.
The concert, including intermission, and will last about 90 minutes.
The first half of the concert will feature the Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band. Chamber Concert Band will begin the performance with British composer Jerry Gray’s opening march from Thunderbirds, the 1960s-era “Supermarionation” television program about the International Rescue team. Other Spies and Private Eyes music from Chamber Concert Band will be Tripwire by Texas composer JaRod Hall, and Spyscape by Illinois composer Timothy Loest. Also on the program will be a consortium premiere of Indian-American composer Asha Srivinasan’s To Be Heard, and hope is not a language the dark voices understand by Minnesota composer Moriah Margaret Jensen. Seth Carlson ’15 will be featured with the Chamber Concert Band as guest conductor for Nobles of the Mystic Shrine by John Philip Sousa, and as organist on Gilded Morning by Texas composer John Wasson.
The Valparaiso High School Wind Ensemble, Westminster Christian High School Band, and VU Chamber Concert Band will combine for the second half of the program, presenting movie music from James Bond, Mission Impossible, The Pink Panther, and Austin Powers, as well as television music from Get Smart and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Please join us on February 10, when we will celebrate the spies and private eyes that save the day on the big screen and on television.
