Presentation by Seth M. Carlson

In conjunction with the 27th annual Sousa Tribute Concert, Dr. Seth Carlson will give an informal presentation about his career. Dr. Carlson graduated from Valparaiso University in 2015 with majors in chemistry and music. He has recently completed requirements for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Education at Boston University. During the Sousa Tribute Concert, Dr. Carlson will serve as guest conductor and organist.

Seth M. Carlson has just completed all of the requirements for the DMA degree in music education at Boston University. Dr. Carlson, organist and conductor, is in his eighth year as director of bands at Westminster Christian School in Miami, Florida, where he leads five concert bands (grades 4-12), high school jazz band, and teaches Advanced Placement music theory. Dr. Carlson is the director of music outreach, organist, and handbell choir director at First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables. During the past two summers, Dr. Carlson served as the student life director for Lutheran Summer Music. He is also the founder and conductor of the Miami Sousa Band, a professional concert band that regularly performs historically informed concerts in the style of John Philip Sousa and his band. Dr. Carlson graduated from Valparaiso University in 2015 with majors in music and chemistry. At VU, he served as principal bassoon in the Chamber Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra, and was a regular organ performer in the Chapel of the Resurrection. In 2017, he earned a master’s degree in music education from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. With Windiana Concert Band, he has toured China, Hawaii, Italy, and New York City. Dr. Carlson’s professional affiliations include the Florida Music Educators Association, Florida Bandmasters Association, National Association for Music Education, and the American Guild of Organists.
