Sarah DeMaris, Senior Research Professor in World Languages and Cultures, published a contribution to the “Katalog der deutschsprachigen illustrierten Handschriften des Mittelalters” (Catalog of German-Language, Illustrated Manuscripts of the Middle Ages), a publication of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (Volume 10, pp. 267–280). The contribution, “Irmhart Öser, ‘Rabbi Samuel’,” concerns a fictional epistolary dialogue between two rabbis, composed in Latin and translated into Middle High German in the 14th century. The German text survives in over 60 manuscripts, six of them illuminated. The text-image relationship in those six manuscripts is the focus of the study.

Kevin Ostoyich, Professor of History, delivered the lecture “Stories about the Shanghai Jews: Bremen, Bavaria, and Beyond” at the Institut für Bayerische Geschichte, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
