The 26th annual Valparaiso University Sousa Tribute Concert will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2024, 4:00p, in the Chapel of the Resurrection. Admission is free for everyone, all seats are general admission, and no ticket is required. Performing will be the Valparaiso Community/University Concert Band, Valparaiso University Luce Concert Band, and Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band.
We have focused on John Philip Sousa each year because he was an exemplary musician and educator, and because of his ties to Valparaiso. He was a pioneer in musical performance, composition, conducting, copyright law, recording, and music education. Maestro Sousa and his band performed in Valparaiso on four occasions —1898, 1904, 1907, and 1914—all at the still-functioning historic Memorial Opera House, located downtown at 104 Indiana Avenue.
Repertoire will include:
Armed Services Medley
God Bless America by Irving Berlin
The Hoosier Slide by Hale VanderCook
March for Peace by Edwin Franko Goldman
They That Sow in Tears Shall Reap in Joy by W.C. Handy
Hine e Hine by Fanny Rose Howie
El Gato Montes by Manuel Panella
Sea Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams
and they gathered on Mount Carmel by Jesse Ayers
Semper Paratus by Francis van Boskerck

And music by John Philip Sousa:
